Dr. Elsey’s, a veterinarian-founded brand known for its science-driven approach to feline care, has long been an innovator in its range of cat litter. In 2024, it officially announced it was halting the production and sale of its scented cat litter line, citing compelling research and ethical responsibility.
Recent studies indicate that artificial fragrances in cat litter can interfere with a cat’s acute sense of smell, triggering behavioral issues, stress-related illnesses and even urinary disorders such as Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), which is a painful, often stress-induced condition that can become chronic. Environmental stressors, including perfumed litter boxes, have been linked to increased rates of “house-soiling” in cats, a leading reason for pet abandonment and surrender to shelters. Moreover, chemical additives used to produce artificial scents may be inhaled or absorbed through sensitive paw pads, with unknown long-term consequences.
