Many lizards make good pets because of their gentle demeanor, ease of care and the availability of a multitude of interesting colors and patterns. In fact, in his September 2018 Management piece, John Mack, founder and CEO of Reptiles by Mack, highlighted how the colors of reptiles entice many consumers.
“Colubrids such as geckos and chameleons are all well-entrenched within pet stores across the world, and each has a number of colors and morphs available from most reptile breeders,” he said. “As reptile breeders hone and refine their ability to track and mix genetic combinations, the potential for new colors and patterns combination may well be effectively infinite.”
It’s important to ensure consumers are getting products that maintain their lizard’s vibrant colors and their overall health. Therefore, products that are designed with lizards in mind should be consumers’ go-to options. For instance, even though the majority of herps require some type of substrate in their terrarium or environment, the substrate product a snake owner gets may not necessarily be the most effective for a lizard owner. Furthermore, the substrate for an iguana may not be the best for a bearded dragon. Know the features of all the products on the market, educate consumers on the differences among them and why it is crucial for pet owners to stick to products particular to their specific herp.
These products provide lizards with everything they need for a healthy lifestyle. From heaters that keep them at the ideal temperature to supplements that give them the extra boost in nutrients they need to flourish, consumers will not only be able to sustain their lizard’s health but improve it for a long-lasting bond.
