Eat, Drink and Be Tidy

Listen to this articleThe primary functions of a bird feeder and a waterer are obvious: to store adequate amounts of nutrition and hydration. However, those two essential receptacles also have an impact on other facets of a bird’s surroundings. That provides retailers with the opportunity to offer a variety of these products so owners can customize to suit the environment as well as the personality of their feathered friends.
“Some birds prefer to eat from an open cup or bowl, so it’s smart to stock these,” said Jason Savitt, president of Prevue Pet Products in Chicago, in “Play in the Bowl Game,” an article that appeared in the November 2018 issue of Pet Age. “But cleanliness and controlling seed mess continue to be driving concerns for bird owners. This is where hooded and mess-control feeders can help.”
For owners who have a lot on their figurative plates, it can help them and their pets to have extra food and water containers on hand.
“With busy schedules, it’s easy to forgo the changing out of bird dishes daily if a pet bird has only one dish for water and one for food,” said Melanie Allen, avian product specialist with Hagen Avicultural Research Institute in Mansfield, Massachusetts. “By having replacement dishes, preferably dishwasher-safe kinds, the receptacles can get rotated, which leads to a cleaner bird environment that helps prevent bacterial growth.”
Some feeders can be mounted inside or outside of a cage or be set up to stand on their own, allowing room for the addition of bird bath. Outdoor birds have their own types of feeders and waterers that are designed to protect their contents from other animals.
Savitt recommends that retailers take a proactive role in advising bird owners on these purchases.
“Guide them and curate a positive and informative shopping experience by suggesting the right feeders and waterers—from ceramic, metal and plastic types to open, hooded and multi-functional designs,” he concluded.
