Many industry experts believe that maintaining a balanced diet of wet and dry food is the most beneficial approach for cats and their overall well-being.

According to the 2017-2018 American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey, 74 percent of cat owners feed their cats dry food more often than any other type of cat food. And APPA also states that the percentage of cats that are overweight or obese, 15 percent, has not changed since 2010.

It’s no secret that cats are a finicky bunch, which can make it a challenge to provide them a healthy diet. Pet food manufacturers thus face a daunting task to create a formula that will satisfy both their nutritional needs as well as their picky nature.

The ingredients in a cat’s food should be simple. It is important for dry food to have ingredients and nutrients that wet food does not offer. That means dry food options should address the dietary, nutritional needs of all cat types.

Dry food for cats should be low in carbohydrate content, emphasize species-appropriate animal protein over plant protein and be free of artificial ingredients that are harmful to cats. But dry food options should still be just as healthy, natural and delicious as its wet food counterparts. These dry food products offer wholesome and fresh ingredients, such as real, raw meat, potatoes and eggs, and provide the natural, delicious taste of the wild that cats love and need for a healthy lifestyle.

The dry cat food category has seen several new trends hit the market in recent years as manufacturers respond to customers’ desires for varieties containing higher protein, dedicated to a natural diet or targeting specific life stages.
