Press release: Wag Heaven

The bushfires in Australia are continuing to take a catastrophic toll on the country’s beloved and unique wildlife. To help contribute to rescue and relief work, Wag Heaven Pet Supplies and Self-Serve Dog Wash in Georgetown, Texas, is raising funds to assist in helping these animals. Wag Heaven will donate $7 from each self-serve dog wash purchase and 50 percent of select dog toy sales through the end of February to aid the efforts of Australia’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in areas affected by the bushfires.

Haunting images of koalas and kangaroos injured or killed in the fires have grabbed international attention for recovery efforts. Chris Dickman, an ecologist at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Science, has estimated that more than 1 billion animals may have been killed or will die. Species with smaller habitats are vulnerable to being wiped out, including the glossy black cockatoo, Kangaroo Island dunmart, koala, hastings river mouse, regent honeyeater, blue mountain water skink, brush tailed rock wallaby, Southern corroboree frog, Quokka, Western ground parrot, and Eastern bristlebird.

“We are deeply saddened by the devastation of wildlife,” said Jeff Manley, co-owner of Wag Heaven. “We chose to raise money for RSPCA Australia as a way to express gratitude for their rescue and recovery efforts.”

RSPCA member societies have been assisting in evacuations, gathering animals and helping them to safety in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. They will also be supporting the difficult job of entering these areas and assessing any injured wildlife. Many animals that have survived the bushfires will require extensive veterinary care for months. Provisions are also needed to help animals survive the massive loss of habitat and food sources.

RSPCA Australia’s mission includes providing services for animals in need, and advocating for their welfare across a range of industries, environments, and issues.  The RSPCA member societies care for animals across Australia, re-homing neglected and unwanted animals through their shelters, and by educating communities about responsible pet ownership.
