Dog and cat owners in the greater Columbus area now have a dedicated choice for help with itchy skin, ears and all skin problems. Thrive Pet Healthcare and its partner, Dermatology for Animals, has announced the opening of Dermatology for Animals Columbus.
Pet ownership in Ohio remains high. Over 60% of Ohio households own at least one pet, including nearly 40% with at least one dog and 31% with at least one cat. The Columbus housing market also reflects a strong pet culture, with more than 60% of rental listings allowing animals, 6% above the national average.
“The Central Ohio community has a strong pet culture, and for those who live with recurring skin and ear issues for months or even years, I’m excited to offer owners and pets relief from these issues,” said Dr. Rachael Loek, veterinary dermatologist at Dermatology for Animals Columbus. “With our services now available in Columbus, families can access earlier diagnosis, faster relief and clearer long-term direction for managing chronic skin, ear and other conditions.”
Dr. Loek grew up outside of Chicago and earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and her doctorate in veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University. She completed a small-animal rotating internship in Houston, Texas. She then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to complete a dermatology specialty internship and then residency with Dermatology for Animals. She transferred from Dermatology for Animals in Salt Lake City to Columbus, where she will lead the new practice.

“Skin, ear and allergy issues can be more than an irritation for our pets,” said Dr. Loek. “They can affect how pets eat, sleep and interact with their families. We work with local veterinarians and pet owners to tailor a plan that fits each animal’s unique needs.”
Founded in 1991, Dermatology for Animals is a leading provider of veterinary dermatology with 24 locations in 14 states. In 2020, the group joined Thrive Pet Healthcare, expanding access to top-tier dermatological care for pets nationwide. The Columbus clinic is the second Dermatology for Animals location in Ohio; the first opened in Akron in 2020.
