Charlee Bear Products, owners of dog treat brand Charlee Bear Dog Treats, has acquired Hound & Gatos, a nationally distributed line of canned pet food known for introducing the Paleolithic diet to dogs and cats.

“At Charlee Bear, our mission is to improve the health and nutrition of pets through simple, natural ingredients one small bite at a time,” Charlee Bear Products owner Peter Gottsacker said. “Our passion for quality pet products and ingredients was a natural fit with Hound & Gatos, and we are pleased to welcome this brand into the Charlee Bear Products family.”

The Hound & Gatos line is designed to cater to the carnivorous instincts of dogs and cats with uniquely simple food, full of nutrition. The only ingredients in its canned recipes are real meat, vitamins and minerals, the same nutrients their Paleolithic ancestors thrived on. These ancestral formulations recreate this diet for cats and dogs.

Paleo diets have become more popular in recent years for people. They feature foods that would have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. Foods like grains, dairy, refined sugar, salt, potatoes and highly processed products do not comply. The purpose behind this specialized diet, according to followers, is that the body isn’t equipped to digest many of the foods in the contemporary diet. The same can be said for the modern pet diet, since many pet foods feature fillers that don’t fulfill the carnivorous needs of cats and dogs.

“Our success at building a significant national presence for Charlee Bear has empowered us to further expand into animal nutrition,” Gottsacker said. “We’re thrilled to be a part of this growing industry and look forward to further building our company’s presence with current and future brands.”

In these early stages of the acquisition, Charlee Bear Products has already started the process of hiring additional management and sales support for the brand, now based in Wisconsin. They’re also planning on refreshing the branding in the coming months.

Hound & Gatos has found success over the years being distributed exclusively through independent pet retailers and plans to continue to exclusively sell to this channel.
