At Philadoptables, helping vulnerable animals is more than a mission — it’s the driving force behind everything the nonprofit organization does.
That mission was on full display this month as Philadoptables joined fellow donors, supporters and the ACCT Philly team to celebrate the completion of the shelter’s newly renovated outdoor dog play yards, a transformational project that will enrich the lives of thousands of homeless dogs for years to come.
Earlier this year, Philadoptables contributed $10,000 as a Guardian-level sponsor, joining a community of organizations and individuals committed to giving Philadelphia’s shelter dogs the care, dignity and opportunities they deserve.
For many shelter dogs, these play yards represent far more than a place to exercise. They provide the opportunity to run freely, release stress, build confidence, participate in meet-and-greets with potential adopters, safely socialize with other dogs, and simply experience the joy of being a dog while waiting for a forever family.
The newly completed project includes:
Four new outdoor play yardsWatching the dogs explore their new surroundings was a powerful reminder of why Philadoptables exists.
Long before Philadoptables became a nonprofit, Founder Michelle spent several days each week volunteering at Philadelphia’s city shelter — photographing homeless animals, writing adoption biographies, networking pets in need, and doing whatever she could to help them find loving homes.
In 2012, Philadoptables helped fund the construction of three outdoor play yards and a pavilion at ACCT Philly. More than a decade later, returning to help support the next generation of play spaces is a meaningful continuation of that commitment.
“Helping at-risk animals is what drives Philadoptables,” said Michelle, Founder of Philadoptables. “Our mission is built around improving the lives of homeless animals while strengthening the community that cares for them. Seeing these dogs run, play, and simply enjoy being outside was incredibly emotional. Safe outdoor spaces give shelter dogs the opportunity to exercise, decompress, interact with potential adopters, and experience enrichment that is essential to both their physical and emotional well-being.”
Research has consistently shown that enrichment plays a vital role in reducing stress, improving behavior, and increasing adoption success. A dog that has the opportunity to run, explore, and interact in a natural environment is better able to show its true personality — creating stronger connections with potential adopters.
The play yards feature thoughtfully designed enrichment areas, agility equipment, shaded gathering spaces, durable artificial turf, and open areas where dogs can safely play, relax, and spend quality time with volunteers and prospective families.
During the celebration, Philadoptables also recognized the leadership and dedication of the ACCT Philly team whose vision helped bring the project to life.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Sarah, Dayna, Connie, and everyone at ACCT Philly for their unwavering commitment to Philadelphia’s homeless animals,” Michelle said. “The work they do every single day changes lives, and we’re honored to stand beside them — and the many generous donors who made these beautiful spaces possible.”
While Philadoptables’ contribution was only one part of a much larger community effort, the organization is proud to invest in projects that create lasting change for both animals and the people who care for them.
For more than 15 years, Philadoptables has remained committed to filling the gaps where help is needed most—providing medical grants, supporting local shelters and rescues, assisting community pet owners, funding lifesaving initiatives, and creating opportunities that improve the quality of life for animals waiting for their second chance.
Because every dog deserves the chance to run, to play, to heal, and to be seen.
