Cadbury on March 24 announced Lieutenant Dan as the winner in their annual Cadbury Easter Bunny contest, making Lieutenant Dan the very first handicapable pup on wheels to become the Easter Bunny.

Lieutenant Dan and his family are ready to show the world how special he really is. This special pup is a double amputee, but he has never let that slow him down! Born with his hind legs and tail deformed, Lieutenant Dan, a Treeing Walker Coonhound, has been walking on his front legs since he was eight weeks old. At six months old, his family made the difficult decision to amputate his back legs and later his tail. Now, Dan uses a Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair to help him run and play. Winning the coveted spot will give this special dog a chance to share his incredible story and show the world that a life on wheels can be amazing!

His family says that Lieutenant Dan, or Lou, “has such an infectious joy for life. He is one of the happiest dogs I have ever owned or met! I swear he is always smiling.” Dan’s family is hoping that with Dan as the Cadbury Easter Bunny that people will see how incredible it can be to own a handicapped dog and how much love they have to share.

“Although owning a handicapable pet is not always easy, trust me it is extra work on our part, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You can’t be around him and not be smiling or laughing! And though it can be extra work, if you have it in you to provide the extra necessary care don’t give up on a pet just because they are different! You never know what they might add to your life!”
