Pet product packaging has always been designed to attract consumer attention as brands attempt to catch the eye of discerning pet parents. The “made in the U.S.A.” category is stronger than ever, and it ranks among the leading categories for product label placement as brands seek to call out where their ingredients and materials are sourced and assembled. Consumers took notice of the U.S.-made category thanks to the melamine recalls of 2007, during which the “FDA learned that certain pet foods were sickening and killing cats and dogs,” according to the government agency’s website. Nearly 15 years later, manufacturers continue to respond to consumer desire for American-made goods, and “made in the U.S.A.” has become a noteworthy selling point. If a product is made in the United States, it’s more than likely that this fact will be clearly indicated — even highlighted — on its packaging. Consumers expect pet food, treats and toys that are U.S.-sourced and American-made to meet their high standards of quality and safety. While national pride is driving demand for patriotic products, there are plenty of challenges to making and sourcing products in the United States. Adam Baker, founder and president of True Dogs, a veteran-owned, American-made company that makes SodaPup dog toys for power chewers, discussed the obstacles with Pet Age in a Trending Topics interview in the January issue of Pet Age. “For sure, there are significant hurdles to U.S. manufacturing when compared to lower cost alternatives in other parts of the world,” Baker stated. “Some product types, like plush toys, are labor intensive because each item is sewn by hand. Therefore, labor costs are a primary consideration. However, those that are committed to figuring it out can make it work.”
