Rutherford Pet Supply Celebrates Grand Re-Opening After 2020 Fire

The Rutherford County community was eager to support the Grand Re-Opening of Rutherford Pet Supply that was held on July 29 in Spindale, North Carolina. The journey of owners and husbands David and Chris Nelson over the past three years provides inspiration for small businesses around the country.

About three months into adjusting their business during the pandemic, a fire broke out in the back of the store in the early morning of May 15, 2020. Loyal customers were saddened by the news that the store was closed down. With no other means of income, and a desire to continue to serve the community, the Nelsons were able to construct a temporary facility on the property and cleverly start a drive-through business to offer curbside pickup of pet supplies for customers.

With the downturn of the economy, the rising costs of construction materials, along with the shortage of construction workers, rebuilding the store took over two years to get started, plus many more months of delays. But the Nelsons were determined that the store would open again.

Loyal and new customers kept coming in during the July 29 Grand Re-Opening to express their support.

“There was at least one measurement I hadn’t counted on,” expressed David Nelson. “That’s the level of joy I saw in the faces of our customers, old and new, which could only lead me to judge the day a big success. Thank you so much for helping.”

“I look forward to growing the new and improved Rutherford Pet Supply with all of you.” added Chris Nelson.

For the Nelsons, it’s about educating residents, providing them with knowledge to better care for their pets. The store also has served as a place to host pet adoptions and rescue groups. These aims have established a supportive community who is loyal and appreciative. In addition, Rutherford Pet Supply hosts Lee Shore Rescue as well as other pet adoption events.
