Press release: Petcurean

As part of the company’s continuing mission of putting pets first, Petcurean, a premium food manufacturer for cats and dogs, is thrilled to announce the return of “Uplift the Underdog: Cat Edition.” Like previous editions, the intention of this contest is to shine a light on the thousands of deserving animals who are overlooked for adoption because of health, age, behavior and other issues – the “underdogs.” Until February 2, Petcurean invites rescue groups, shelters and all supporters across North America to get involved, and help these deserving cats find loving homes to live out the rest of their lives. Please note, a separate version of this contest will be running in Quebec.

According to the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 3.2 million cats are taken into shelters across the United States each year. While 1.6 million are adopted each year, 860,000 are euthanized. North of the border, Humane Canada estimates that approximately 81,000 cats were taken into shelters in 2018, and approximately 62 percent of cats in shelters ultimately got adopted. When you consider these measures do not include thousands of non-member organizations in both countries, the number of cats who desperately need help becomes much more apparent.

“Every day, thousands of cats are taken into shelters across the United States and Canada, and, sadly, many of them will ultimately be euthanized because they are perceived as “too hard to adopt” because of their age, health or some other type of perceived imperfection,” said Christine Mallier, PR & community relations manager at Petcurean. “If just one cat is able to find their forever family because of the attention raised by “Uplift the Underdog: Cat Edition”, we will view the campaign as a success. By working together, and doing whatever each of us is able, it’s our sincere belief that we have the power to help these cats, with their amazing hearts and spirits, find the forever homes they deserve.”

Rescue groups and shelters in the United States and Canada are invited to visit Uplift the Underdog website to submit the details of their most overlooked, but utterly adoptable cats. Of the cats nominated, 12 finalists will be selected – six Americans and six Canadians. These finalists will be announced on February 18, and supporters will be invited to learn about the finalists, do their part to help raise awareness, and vote for their favourite cats. The public voting period will last until February 24 at 6:00 p.m. PST. The winner will be announced on February 25.

All 12 of the finalists’ shelters will receive a cat food donation of 2,000 meals to support the important work they’re doing to help animals in their communities. Petcurean will also pay the adoption fee for all 12 finalists, and if they are adopted, they will receive year’s supply of food to take to their new homes. The cat who receives the most votes in each category will receive a three-year supply of food from Petcurean.
