Press release: Bright Planet Pet

Bright Planet Pet, the first company to launch plant-based dog treats that taste and smell like real meat and a recent winner of Purina’s 2022 Pet Care Innovation Prize, is now available in Petco stores across the country.

Woman-owned and led, Bright Planet Pet was founded in March 2020 by Katherine and Dave Ellison on the principle that dogs, and their people, deserve a truly sustainable dog treat that is delicious while being 100% plant-based and vegan. All treats are made from sustainable all-natural ingredients, create 90 percent less carbon emissions, use 68 percent less water than comparable meat-based treats and help pet parents reduce their dog’s carbon pawprint. For every purchase, Bright Planet Pet donates to the Eden Reforestation Project to plant one tree further helping combat climate change. In 2021, Bright Planet Pet planted 15,581 trees and by the end of this year, the goal is to reach 100,000 trees planted.

“Bright Planet Pet was born out of a desire to create a brighter, better planet for everyone,” said Katherine. “Every small change adds up and having an option for plant-based treats, that are equally delicious as meat treats, helps reduce the number of animals in our supply chain, reduce carbon pawprints, and live more sustainable, green-forward lives.”

Available products include Better Burg’r, Better Brat, and Better BBQ Chick’n. All products are made with chickpea flour, brown rice, dehydrated sweet potato, and dried brewer’s yeast; they are free-from corn, soy, wheat and peas.

Treats are available for purchase online at the brand’s website and at approximately 500 Petco stores around the country as part of Petco’s sustainability efforts and commitment to increasing its assortment of sustainable products to 50 percent by the end of 2025.

In addition to being one of five Purina Pet Care Innovation Prize Winners, out of 120 applicants, Bright Planet Pet was also recently accepted into Leap Venture Studio, the first pet care-specific startup accelerator. The Studio represents Michelson Found Animals and Mars Petcare’s commitment to improving the lives of pets and their owners through science, technology, and innovation.
