NBCUniversal Local recently announced that actress and comedian Lauren Ash will serve as spokesperson for its 2021 Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign, which begins today and runs through Sept. 19. Best known for NBC’s hit comedy “Superstore,” Ash will host the Clear The Shelters special that will recap the seventh annual initiative and share heartwarming adoption stories. More information on the special, which will be presented on NBC stations and COZI TV, and its Spanish-language counterpart will be announced in September.

Since its 2015 inception, NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters has helped more than half a million pets find new homes. Last year’s effort, which included virtual adoptions and online donations for the first time, resulted in more than $1.2 million in donated funds for shelters and rescues. More than 1,000 shelters and rescues across the U.S. and Puerto Rico are participating in this year’s campaign.

Ash starred as the character Dina Fox in the critically acclaimed “Superstore,” which celebrated its successful six-season run on NBC with its series finale this past March. Her work on the final season of the show earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast Network Comedy at the upcoming 2021 Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. Her long list of additional film and TV credits includes: “Another Period,” “Super Fun Night,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “Scare Tactics” and the Oscar-nominated “The Disaster Artist.” She is also co-host of the award-winning true crime podcast True Crime & Cocktails, which she launched in 2020 with her cousin and best friend Christy Oxborrow.

Ash voices the fan favorite Scorpia in all five seasons of “She Ra and the Princesses of Power” and will be returning to the animation world this September playing the titular character in “Chicago Party Aunt.” Hailing from Canada, she is the recipient of six Canadian Comedy Awards and a Canadian Screen Award (Canada’s Emmys). Ash currently resides in Los Angeles with her rescue Chihuahuas, Fox and Peaches and tabby cat, Sharky.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to participate in this year’s Clear The Shelters campaign and host the special! My biggest passion in life is advocating for animal adoption and I have been a huge fan of this initiative for years,” said Ash. “I’m so excited to be a part of something that will help so many amazing animals find their forever homes. Getting to share my home with animals is a true joy and I encourage everyone to consider expanding your family to include a furry friend.  There are so many amazing animals out there who have much love to give, they just need you to give them a chance. I also always encourage people to consider adopting an older animal! You’ll change their lives and I promise they’ll change yours too.”

This year’s Clear The Shelters will again feature online donations through fundraising partner Greater Good Charities, a national nonprofit that benefits people, pets and the planet. The Animal Rescue Site will host the fundraising and will cover all transaction fees so that 100 percent of donations will go directly to shelters and rescues in need. More than $100,000 in matching funds will be available for shelters. Online donations can be made to a participating shelter or rescue during the campaign at the Clear the Shelters Fund website.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is the national sponsor for its fourth Clear The Shelters campaign this year. As part of Clear The Shelters, Hill’s Pet Nutrition will provide adoption kits to help new pet parents and pets start off their new life together. Kits containing starter bags of Hill’s science-led nutrition, coupons, pet-parenting tips and other supplies will be available at select shelters during the campaign.
