Striving for Balance Yet Again

A year has come and gone and it is time to make resolutions and set goals.

As I have said before, I use the New Year as a reminder to balance my work life and my personal life yet again. Every year I struggle with that as this industry requires a lot of travel.

It is necessary to travel around the country since this industry spreads from Maine to Oregon and even overseas. I love being able to see everyone and everything at different events. However, I seem to be away from home more often than I would like.

Last year, my daughter joined the swim team and I was able to time her races and spend more time with her. This year, she has begun synchronized swimming and I have been asked to be the official announcer and emcee at fundraising events. This will allow me more time to spend with my daughter and my wife. Now I can make even more of an effort to balance my time with them and my time working and traveling.

I often have to remind my staff to strike a balance between work and play as well. Our editorial staff has been working very hard to produce timely and original content while our sales representatives also travel and network constantly. Our design team is also working hard on new layouts as we speak so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for changes to the magazine in the new future.

All of these things sometimes require a little extra time in the office. This year, I plan on setting an example of perfect balance to my staff.

Don’t take this the wrong way; we still plan on attending events and trade shows like usual. In fact, I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at the first big trade show, Global Pet Expo, in Orlando.

We are also repeating our Distributor of the Year event and adding new special sections and events to the magazine. Watch for these events as we will be announcing them through the magazine and of course, on social media and our website.

Also, enjoy 2014-2015 Pet Age Retailer Report this issue with tons of useful information from your peers and maybe even you. We appreciate anyone who took the time to fill out our reader survey.

So while you celebrate the New Year and make resolutions and yearly goals for your store, don’t forget to include lots of family time as well. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
