Drawn to the soft, warm fur of pets, these common pests feed on pets’ blood and can cause health problems ranging from allergic reactions to serious illnesses, including Lyme disease. And with dogs spending more time outdoors during the hot summer months, the result is an increased exposure to parasites.
It’s important for pet owners to be proactive in keeping their pets and home safe from common pests. Therefore, manufacturers, retailers and consumers need to be familiar with the signs of fleas and ticks. For dogs, signs of fleas are dark specks (flea droppings) in the fur, white specks (flea eggs) in the fur, excessive licking or scratching, and scabs or hot spots on the skin.
Ticks can be felt when petting dogs and are typically easy to see. They most often attach near the head, neck, ears or paws. It’s also important to be familiar with the proper removal of these pests as well as what to look out for with flea- or tick-related illnesses.
Both fleas and ticks are more common during the warmer months, but steps can be taken to ward them off any time of year. There are several forms of flea and tick prevention, with the most common being collars and topical medications. However, several other preventative products, such as sprays, shampoos and oral powders, are steadily growing in popularity.
