Pet Valu, a specialty retailer of premium pet food, treats, toys and accessories, once again saw a strong showing from its customers during its Patriotic Pets fundraiser, an annual event that runs July 4 to September 11 in support of The United States War Dogs Association. In its seventh year, Pet Valu stores collected a total of $427,095 to support war dogs that have served with the U.S. military overseas. Since the inception of this fundraiser in 2010, Pet Valu has raised more than $2 million for the organization.

During the campaign, customers purchased an American flag bandana for $5 or a paper paw to hang in the store window for any amount of their choosing. The proceeds will help U.S. War Dogs cover the costs of transporting veteran war dogs back to the U.S. after service, reuniting them with their former service member handlers or finding them forever homes, and provide free medications and state-of-the-art equipment needed by the dogs both overseas and back home.

This year, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Pet Valu and the U.S. War Dogs Association decided to turn the focus of the Patriotic Pets campaign toward raising money for the people and pets affected in the Houston area. From now through the end of September, Pet Valu stores will be accepting donations for the Houston SPCA and other local shelters. To launch the effort, Pet Valu and its sister brand, Pet Supermarket, donated $100,000 in pet food and products.

“We are always grateful to our customers who continue to support the causes that are so critical to pets and animals in need,” said Joe Dent, vice president and U.S. general manager for Pet Valu. “This year’s Patriotic Pets campaign will be particularly memorable because our stores’ communities came together to support the work being carried out by two important groups—the U.S. War Dogs Association and the Houston area shelters helping out after Hurricane Harvey.”
