In July 2005, Biff Picone and Nadine Joli-Coeur opened their first Natural Pawz store in Sterling Ridge, Texas. The location had 750 square feet of retail space. This year, after a neighboring business moved out of its location, the two owners knew it was the right time to expand their original store.
Now, over 10 years after its original store opened, Natural Pawz is celebrating the doubling in size of its newly dubbed flagship store, and on October 15, Picone and Joli-Coeur held a grand re-opening ribbon cutting ceremony.
“We really had no idea how it would be accepted and how Natural Pawz would grow,” Picone said about originally opening the first store. “… Within a couple of years it was much too small because of the response we got from pet parents in the area.”
Having the opportunity to finally expand has been a great success for Natural Pawz. The store’s overall square footage doubled to 3,000, and according to Joli-Coeur, the extra space has been great in being able to carry new products and having the ability to be creative with displays.
Now that there is more space in the Sterling Woods location, Natural Pawz started carrying small animal products, something it was unable to do due to restricted space, Joli-Coeur said.
But even though the store has expanded, Natural Pawz still wants its customers to feel like they’re not entering a big-box-type place.
“I pride myself in knowing my products and being able to select natural products,” Joli-Coeur said. “… We really want to make sure not to lose that feel of a local pet shop.”
So far, customers have really been enjoying the expansion. And according to Picone, the location’s first month’s sales have reflected this.
“Our customers love it,” Picone said. “Our customer feedback has been awesome.”
Pet parents’ excitement for the store was seen at the kick-off event. There, Natural Pawz partnered with Merrick to give more than 1,000 pounds of pet food to the Friends of Montgomery County Texas Animal Shelter, continuing its support of animal rescue.
