Halo, Purely for Pets, the natural pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres, is a finalist in the PR News Platinum PR Awards, a national awards competition recognizing the best in PR and marketing programs.

Halo’s campaign, “Halo, Purely for Pets Helps Homeless Pets Win Big in Oscar Gift Bags” is a finalist in the WOW! Award category, which honors “the most innovative, out-of-the-box PR campaign or paradigm-shifting communications idea of 2014.”

According to PR News, “The finalists of the Platinum PR Awards set industry standards for excellence across all areas of PR. Finalists are from corporations, agencies and nonprofits, both large and small that took chances, made tremendous strides in their communications efforts and understand the power of public relations.”

Well known for its year-round philanthropic efforts, Halo, Purely for Pets partners with Freekibble.com and GreaterGood.org to donate more than 1.5 million meals to shelter pets each year.

This year, celebrities who didn’t take home the Oscar Gold at the 2014 Academy Awards were still winners in the pet community. Halo, in partnership with Freekibble.com, gave 20 non-winning Oscar nominees in top categories 10,000 meals of Halo Spot’s Stew to donate to the animal shelter or rescue of the celebrity’s choice.

The donations were part of the coveted $85,000 nominee “Everyone Wins at the Oscars” gift bag from Distinctive Assets, the marketing firm that launched the celebrity swag trend 15 years ago.

Fulfilling its Oscar campaign promise, Halo and Freekibble.com sent over 200,000 meals to Los Angeles area shelters and beyond. For example, Julia Roberts chose Stray Hearts Animal Shelter in Taos, N.M,. Meryl Streep asked that the donation be made in her father, Harry Streep Jr.’s, name to The Little Guild of St. Francis in Conn. and Barkhad Abdi gifted his donation to the Midwest Animal Rescue and Services in Minneapolis.

The winners and honorable mentions will be recognized at the Platinum PR Awards Luncheon on September 16 from 12-2:30 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.
