Jim Dougherty, the founder of Petsense, Inc and PetSmart Inc. retired from his position as chairman of the board at Petsence, according to a press release issued by the Arizona-based company.
The announcement comes days after PetSmart publicly acknowledged in the New York Times the company is up up for sale, and that they acquired Pet360.
Dougherty founded PetSmart, Inc. in 1986. It has subsequently has grown to become the largest pet products retailer in the U.S. with over 1,000 locations.

After a hiatus from the pet industry, Dougherty decided it was time to “do it again” and in 2005 founded Petsense, Inc.
Dougherty’s departure from Petsense does not signal the end of his presence in the pet industry. He will continue to be one of the major shareholders of Petsense, Inc. and with his passion for the industry he intends to remain active and pursue other opportunities, according to a press release.
