Big Dog Natural of Brick, N.J., has issued a voluntary recall on a select production lot of its raw dehydrated dog food line.

Shipments of Big Dog Natural Chicken Supreme and Fish Supreme sent to online customers the week of 10/31/2015 to 11/13/2015 are potentially contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, respectively. Both can affect animals that have eaten the product as well as humans who have handled it, especially if hands or surfaces that made contact with the product are not cleaned thoroughly.

The company became aware of the issue when it was notified by the FDA that investigational samples of its Chicken Supreme tested positive for Salmonella and samples of Fish Supreme tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Consequently, all weight volumes of the Big Dog Natural Chicken Supreme and Fish Supreme have been recalled. They were sold directly to customers through Big Dog Natural’s website and in the U.S.A. No additional products have been affected.

Infected pets may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Others may only show a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets can also be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

Humans may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping or fever in most cases of infection. In rare cases, infection can have more serious consequences, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers are advised to discontinue feeding pets affected products, remain watchful for any symptoms associated with infection and contact their veterinarian with any concerns. Likewise, consumers experiencing symptoms should contact their health providers.

Full refunds or exchanges can be obtained by returning the product in its original packaging. Visit Big Dog Natural’s website or call 732-785-2600 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST for more information.
