The dog days of summer have come to an end, which for Rubie’s Pet Shop Boutique means one thing: Halloween of course. Rubie’s Pet Shop Boutique, a division of Halloween powerhouse, Rubie’s Costume Company, announced it will be the main sponsor of the 27th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. On Saturday, October 21, from noon to 3 p.m., thousands of costumed canines and spectators will march on Tompkins Square Park to participate in the country’s largest Halloween Costume Parade for dogs. This year, they will be competing for thousands of dollars in prizes, including “Hamilton” tickets for the winner of “Best in Show” and, naturally, bragging rights for the year. All proceeds go to the N.Y.C. Department of Parks & Recreation for the maintenance and upkeep of the newly restored Tompkins Square Dog Run.
Tompkins Square Dog Run is the largest dog run in New York City. The tradition of an annual dog run Halloween parade began in Tompkins Square in the 1980s and has spawned similar events around the city. Dogs wishing to compete for prizes should arrive anytime between 12-2 p.m. Prizes are awarded during two rounds, with judges crowning the 10 best from each before choosing an overall winner for “Best in Show.” Purina PetCare is also sponsoring the event.
