Pet Food Recalled for Listeria

According to Central Veterinary Associates, Stella & Chewy’s of Oak Creek, Wis. is voluntarily recalling several types of pet food after the Maryland Department of Agriculture found Listeria in a single lot of Chewy’s Chicken Freeze Dried Dinner For Dogs. As an added precaution, the recall includes products that have not tested positive for Listeria, but may have come in contact with the infected batch. There have been no reported pet or human illnesses associated with these products.

The following Stella & Chewy’s products have been recalled:

• Freeze Dried Chewy’s Chicken Dinner for Dogs, Size: 15 ounces UPC: 186011000045/Lot: 111-15; Use By dates: April 23 and 26, 2016
• Freeze Dried Chick, Chick, Chicken Dinner for Cats, Size: 12 ounces UPC: 186011000434/Lot: 111-15; Use By dates: April 29 and May 3, 2016
• Carnivore Crunch – Turkey Recipe, Size: 3.25 ounces UPC: 186011001103/Lot: 111-15; Use By dates: May 3 and 4, 2016

The following products did not test positive for Listeria, but were recalled as a precautionary measure because they may have come into contact with the infected batch:

Listeria can cause serious illness in both humans and pets. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain; symptoms for pets are similar. Those with weakened immune systems, such as children, and the frail or elderly are more likely at risk of serious illness or death as the result of exposure to Listeria.

“We are asking all pet owners who have bought this product to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” said Dr. John Charos, president and CEO, Central Veterinary Associates. “If you notice any symptoms of Listeria in your pets, take them to a veterinarian immediately, as exposure to Listeria can be extremely life-threatening to pets.”
