HSUS Gives Stores ‘Puppy Friendly’ Label
Taking a new direction in its campaign against what it calls “puppy mills,” the Humane Society of the United States (Washington) now is urging independent retailers across the country to sign its “Puppy Friendly Pledge” and promise that they will support local animal shelters or point customers toward reputable breeders instead of selling dogs themselves.
Owners and managers of independent stores—including businesses that are unlikely to sell live animals, such as doggie bakeries and spas—who sign the pledge receive a placard that says, “We love puppies; that’s why we don’t sell them.”
News releases lauding stores that sign the pledge are distributed to local media outlets and posted online. [December 2009 PET AGE]
