Mars Petcare US Inc. (Franklin, Tenn.) in August recalled two dry dog foods after tests by the Food and Drug Administration confirmed the presence of Salmonella in finished product.

Made at the company’s plant in Everson, Pa., 5-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry food—sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania—and 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food—sold only in Pennsylvania—were recalled for their potential to spread Salmonella Schwarzengrund to dogs as well as people who handle the food. Specific lot codes include UPC 7513062596 and best-by dates July 16, 2008, and July 17, 2008, for the Krasdale Gravy food; and UPC 4286900062 and best-by date July 12, 2008, for the Red Flannel food.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Signs of the disease in people include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can travel to the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
