Study Gathers Data on Relinquished Pets
The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is conducting the first nationwide study to get a more accurate idea of how many animals are relinquished to shelters, how many are adopted and how many are euthanized.
Hundreds of animal shelters and rescue organizations provided shelter management numbers for the Shelter Population Index Study before its May 31 deadline.
Data on more than 2.5 million animals will be included in the final report, to be published before the year’s end.
“By sometime in the next year, animal welfare professionals will have concrete statistics to help them educate the public and continuing to fight against pet overpopulation,” according to the group’s Web site.
