AAFCO Moves Forward With Good Manufacturing Practices
Regulations governing current Good Manufacturing Practice gained approval from the Feed Manufacturing Committee at the Association of American Feed Control Officials’ August meeting in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The regulations still must be approved by the Model Bill Committee and the board of directors before they can be published in the AAFCO Official Publication.
If adopted, the regulations will mandate that feed manufacturers adopt procedures for minimizing risks associated with manufacturing practices as well as handling and storing ingredients and finished feed. It also will impose additional labeling requirements.
Also at the meeting, AAFCO tabled until its January meeting a proposal by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition to amend the Model Pet Food Regulations to require calorie statements on pet food labels. Consideration was deferred to give members more time to evaluate new supporting documents submitted by the Pet Food Institute and the ACVN.
In addition, the Pet Food Committee formed a new working group to review the label proposal. The working group also will evaluate Pet Food Regulation 10, which covers descriptive terms such as “lite,” “low calorie” and “low fat.”
The January 2008 meeting will be held in San Antonio, Texas. [October 2007 PET AGE]
