PIJAC-Canada Fights Ornamental Fish Tariffs
PIJAC Canada (Ottawa, Ontario) is lobbying Canadian legislators
to eliminate a 15 percent tariff on ornamental fish shipments
from the United States that went into effect in May.
Canada imposed the tariff in protest against the United States’
Byrd amendment, targeting states that supported the amendment,
according to the trade association. Targeted states include
Florida, home to a large number of tropical fish farms.
In a meeting with a government representative, PIJAC Canada
protested the lack of consultation with the pet industry.
The organization also argued that the tariff is detrimental
to Canadian consumers as well as to the pet industry.
Items on the list subject to tariffs undergo annual review,
usually at the end of the year. PIJAC Canada said it will
continue its efforts to remove ornamental fish from the list.
