FDA Seeks Comments on Feed Certification Programs
Following the publication in July of a draft guidance document on voluntary third-party certification programs for foods and animal feeds, the Food and Drug Administration is accepting input on suggested criteria for certifiers and programs.
According to the FDA, an increasing number of retailers and other establishments that sell food and feed products to the public are asking their suppliers for third-party certification to ensure safety and quality standards as a condition of doing business with them.
Furthermore, many domestic and foreign suppliers are relying on such certification programs to help them meet regulatory requirements, the agency said.
The FDA may consider incentives, such as expedited entry from other countries, to encourage participation in the voluntary certification program, according to the draft document.
