Mark Backer’s 40th Christmas Show
A full slate of educational seminars, giveaways and special
events await pet industry buyers at H.H. Backer’s 40th
Annual Pet Industry Christmas Trade Show and Educational Conference,
Oct. 6-8 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont
(Chicago), Ill.
More than 900 pet supply manufacturers and distributors will
occupy 1,500 booths at the show, and approximately 9,000 pet
store owners and managers, distributors, groomers and other
qualified buyers will attend, according to Colette Fairchild,
trade show director for H.H. Backer Associates Inc. (Chicago).
As usual, H.H. Backer will offer free admission to nine in-depth
business seminars: “Maximizing Aquatic Supplies Sales”
by Joe Olenik, Gary Sparks and Patrick Dobson; “Expanding
Your Dog- and Cat-Related Business” by Barry Berman;
“Guerrilla Marketing” by Vicki Lynne Morgan; “Bulletproofing
Your Business” by Mort Brown; “Increasing Business
and Profits With Your POS System” by Richard Kann; “How
to Run a Profitable Aquatic Department” by Patrick Dobson;
“Greater Retail Success With the NexPet Group”
by Barry Berman; and “Time is Money” and “Poodle
Grooming ABCs” by Diane Betelak.
The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (Washington) will
present canine and reptile certification seminars on Oct.
6 and Oct. 7, respectively. An on-site fee of $50 covers materials
and certification costs. PIJAC members can call 800-553-7387
for information about discounted rates and registration procedures.
Nearly $9,000 will be awarded throughout the weekend—with
a grand-prize drawing of $2,000 on Sunday afternoon—in
Backer’s Cash Bonanza contest. Distributors and pet
store owners and managers can pick up entry forms for the
daily drawings at registration and in participating sponsors’
booths.
More than $20,000 in cash, travel packages, trophies and
ribbons will be awarded to top-notch groomers competing in
the three-day Celebration of Style grooming competition, sanctioned
by GroomTeam USA (Beaumont, Calif.).
And just for the fun of it, stop by the Canine Sports Arena
to see Matt Wilcox’s Ultimate Air Dogs soar through
the air into a pool of water, vying for the greatest height
and distance. The dogs will perform at once on Friday and
Sunday, and twice on Saturday.

GANGSTERS GALORE
Flappers,
floozies and mobsters will mingle with members of the
pet industry on Saturday, Oct. 7, to celebrate the 40th
anniversary of the Pet Industry Christmas Trade Show in
a gangster-themed party co-sponsored by H.H. Backer Associates
Inc. (Chicago) and Coastal Pet Products Inc. (Alliance,
Ohio). The party will begin
at 9 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency
O’Hare Hotel. Cash prizes will be awarded to the
best-dressed partygoers in a costume contest that will
start at 10:15 p.m.
