PETS IN THE
WORKPLACE
On the heels of Take Your Dog to Work Day, held June 23, a survey
by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (Greenwich,
Conn.) shows that nearly one in five U.S. companies allows pets
at work.
A majority of working Americans who participated in the poll
believe that having pets at work relieves stress, promotes
a happier workforce and creates a happier work environment.
“More and more, we are starting to see the benefits
of pets as they transcend the role they play at home into
other nontraditional areas, such as places of work,”
said Bob Vetere, president of APPMA. “This survey solidifies
what most of us already know: Americans can’t seem to
get enough of their pets.”
Other survey findings about allowing pets in the workplace:
• 41 percent of respondents believe it leads to a more creative
environment.
• 39 percent believe it decreases absenteeism.
• 37 percent believe it helps coworkers get along better.
• 34 percent who bring their pets to the workplace work longer
hours.
• 28 percent believe it creates a more productive work environment.
• 27 percent believe it helps improve relationships between
managers and employees.
• 24 percent believe it decreases smoking in the workplace.
