USDA Requires Snail Permits
The U.S. Department of Agriculture now requires a permit with interstate shipments of all freshwater and marine snails, according to the Florida Tropical Fish Farms Association (Winter Haven).

Shippers must obtain a permit for each state they ship into, and a permit for each species shipped. Shippers must include a copy of applicable permits in every shipment. Undocumented shipments are subject to confiscation.

The FTFFA recommends that shippers apply for permits for all states they currently ship to, as well as any states they may ship to in the future, for each snail species they ship. The permits are good for three years.

All farms that ship snails should apply for USDA accreditation and then acquire the necessary permits, according to the FTFFA.

Shippers can apply for permits online at www.aphis.usda.gov/permits/learn_epermits.shtml. [August 2006 PET AGE]
