Pet Food Sales Show Modest Growth
Pet food sales totaled $10.7 billion at the manufacturer level
in 2003, up a modest 3.6 percent from 2002 levels, according
to new reports from Business Trend Analysts (Commack, N.Y.).
Dog food sales totaled $6.5 billion in 2003, and cat food
sales totaled $3.4 billion, according to “The 2004/2005
Outlook for the U.S. Dog Food Market” and “The
2004/2005 Outlook for the U.S. Cat Food Market.” Sales
of other pet foods—including foods for reptiles, small
animals and ornamental fish—totaled $825.4 million.
Together, pet foods represented approximately 44 percent of
total pet-related spending in the United States.
Although all three pet food categories grew in 2004, the
amount of growth will be modest once all the figures are tallied,
according to Business Trend Analysts. Furthermore, average
annual growth is expected to decline to 2.1 percent by 2012.
Organic pet foods represent a notable growth area. According
to the reports, sales of organic pet foods will reach $32
million in 2004, as consumers seek out foods free of additives,
preservative and pesticides.
