Certified
Mariculture Stock Available
The first three international suppliers to be certified under
new Mariculture and Aquaculture Management standards recently
began shipping certified cultured marine ornamentals—including
live rock—to wholesale and retail customers.
Hawaiian Live Rock (Kaunakakai, Hawaii), Rain Garden Ornamentals
of Hawaii (Hakipu’u, Hawaii) and Tropical Marine Centre
Ltd. (Hertfordshire, England) were certified in January by
the Marine Aquarium Council (Honolulu) as complying with the
Mariculture and Aquaculture Management standard. An extension
of the MAC certification standard, the MAM standard covers
the management, propagation, collection and culturing of marine
aquarium organisms.
In related news, MAC partnered with Tetra Tech EM Inc. (Manila
and Cebu, Philippines), an environmental consulting and engineering
company, to promote sustainable reefs and fisheries in coastal
fishing communities in the Philippines. [July 2006 PET AGE]
