CATalyst Council Names Top Cat Cities

Tampa, Fla., is the most cat-friendly city in the country, according to the CATalyst Council (Kansas City, Mo.), a national initiative created to champion feline causes.

Tampa was singled out on the basis of factors like cat ownership per capita, level of veterinary care, microchipping and cat-friendly local ordinances.

Other cities in the top 10 are Phoenix, San Francisco, Portland, Ore., Denver, Boston, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta and Minneapolis.

Ithaca, N.Y., which is home to the Cornell (University) Feline Health Center, received an honorable mention.

“Cats really are America’s No. 1 companion,” said Dan Kramer, senior marketing manager of industry relations for Pfizer Animal Health (New York) and chair of the CATalyst Council. “We applaud the efforts of these major metropolitan areas for providing a wealth of resources for cats and their owners.”

The CATalyst Council, a coalition of veterinary, academic, nonprofit, industry and animal welfare organizations, hopes to show how much cats are loved in these cities—and set the bar for other cities to follow in the annual rankings. [June 2009 PET AGE]
