Ferret Lovers
Plan Another Legalization Effort
Ferret enthusiasts in March launched a new Web site in their
latest bid to legalize the animals in California, one of only
two states where ferrets remain illegal.
The Web site of the California Legalization Initiative for
Ferrets, www.legalizeferrets.org, is designed to determine
whether there is enough support among ferret owners and others
to mount a ballot initiative. Organizers hope at least 3,000
people will pay $10 and pledge to collect 100 signatures,
or pay $100 with no signature requirement. If the 3,000 goal
is reached, supporters will file the initiative with the California
Secretary of State’s office.
Numerous previous attempts at legalization have failed, including
an amnesty bill vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last
year as “too bureaucratic.” A current bill, Assembly
Bill 647, was stripped of its ferret-amnesty clause.
