Dog Writers Association of America Cites Best Writing of 2008
A book featuring 50 do-it-yourself dog food recipes cooked up a lot of positive feedback to win the award for best general interest book in the annual writing competition held by the Dog Writers Association of America (Coatesville, Pa.).
The Healthy Dog Cookbook, by executive chef Jonna Anne with help from canine nutritionist Mary Straus and veterinary consultant Dr. Shawn Messonnier, was published by T.F.H. Publications Inc. (Neptune City, N.J.).
Dozens of other writers and artists whose works appeared in newspapers, magazines, club publications and books picked up awards during the DWAA banquet in February in New York. Among them:
- Best care and health book: Grab Life by the Leash by Cheryl Smith (Howell/Wiley, Hoboken, N.J.).
- Best training and behavior book: Oh, Behave! by Jean Donaldson (Dogwise, Wenatchee, Wash.).
- Best single-breed pet guide: Bichon Frises by Elaine Waldorf Gewirtz (T.F.H. Publications Inc.).
- Best all-breed magazine: Dog Fancy, published by Fancy Publications (Los Angeles).
Steve Dale won several multimedia awards in addition to one for broadcast journalism for his work on various podcasts, radio shows and Web sites.
Dr. M. Christine Zink won the Eukanuba Canine Health Award for The Agility Advantage (Clean Run Productions L.L.C., South Hadley, Mass.).
Bo Bengtson, Amy Fernandez and Richard G. Beauchamp received the Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers Arthur Frederick Jones Award from BowTie Inc., a division of Fancy Publications Inc. (Los Angeles).
Rise Van Fleet received the Planet Dog Foundation Sit, Speak, Act Canine Service Award for Play Therapy With Kids and Canines (Professional Resource Press, Sarasota, Fla.). [May 2009 PET AGE]
