Association Honors Top Dog Writers
Dog Spelled Backwards by Mordecai Siegal (St. Martins Press, New York) won the Pro Plan President’s Award for best publication of the year and was named best anthology in the annual writing competition held by the Dog Writers Association of America (Coatesville, Pa.).
Dozens of other writers and artists whose works appeared in newspapers, magazines, club publications and books picked up awards during the DWAA banquet in February in New York. Among them:
• Best general interest book: The Howell Book of Dogs by Liz Palika (Howell/Wiley, Hoboken, N.J.).
• Best care and health book: The Living Well Guide for Senior Dogs by Diane Morgan (T.F.H. Publications Inc., Neptune City, N.J.).
• Best training and behavior book: The Dog Behavior Answer Book by Arden Moore (Storey Publishing, North Adams, Mass.).
• Best single-breed pet guide: The Australian Shepherd (T.F.H. Publications Inc., Neptune City, N.J.).
• Best all-breed magazine: AKC Family Dog, published by the American Kennel Club (New York).
• Best special interest magazine: Dogs for Kids, published by Fancy Publications Inc. (Los Angeles).
Dr. Karen Halligan won the Eukanuba Canine Health Award for Doc Halligan’s What Every Pet Owner Should Know (Harper Collins, New York).
Elaine Gewitz won the Hartz Mountain Health Care Award for The Living Well Guide for Senior Dogs.
Steve Dale won the broadcast journalism award for his “Pet Central: Humane Issues” program, which aired on WGN Radio on Sept. 9, 2007. [May 2008 PET AGE]
