Pet Products Recalled in Wake of Salmonella Outbreak
Manufacturers voluntarily pulled nearly 2,000 products from store shelves after salmonella was found in widely distributed peanut ingredients, but only a handful of pet products—mostly sold in major chain stores—were involved in the recalls, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Voluntarily recalled were treats such as Grreat Choice and Carolina Prime Pet, sold mostly at PetSmart; Happy Trails products from Supervalu, sold at Albertsons, Jewel-Osco and Acme grocery stores; and a variety of dog biscuits from American Nutrition Inc. (Ogden, Utah). Roasted feed-grade peanuts also were recalled by Western Trade Group Inc. (Port Angeles, Wash.).

The FDA investigation, ongoing at press time, focused on the Peanut Corp. of America facility in Blakely, Ga. Published reports said the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection just before Valentine’s Day.
The salmonella scare pushed the FDA to use new social media, including blogs, podcasts, Twitter and MySpace.com posts, to alert more consumers to recall updates, according to Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. [April 2009 PET AGE]
