Are Pets Recession-Proof?

People forced to reduce monthly expenses during a recession are far more likely to trim spending on luxury items, electronics and even groceries and household goods for themselves than on care and supplies for their pets, according to an online survey by Fleishman-Hillard International Communications, a global public relations firm.

“We conducted this survey to help give our animal care clients better insight into how changes in the economy might affect their plans for 2008,” said Brian Cox, senior vice president for Fleishman-Hillard and a member of its animal care practice. “Frankly, we’re not at all surprised to see this type of loyalty among pet owners. Even if a recession does occur, pet owners will continue to provide for their companions.”

For all their willingness to continue caring for their pets during a recession, however, one-third of respondents said they might cut spending on veterinary visits and preventive medications if faced with financial constraints.

“We know that veterinarians’ recommendations carry the greatest weight with pet owners when making decisions about their pets,” said Doug Bell, senior vice president for Fleishman-Hillard and a member of the company’s animal care practice. “If a recession hits in 2008, veterinarians and their in-clinic teams will need to take the time to remind clients that ongoing preventive care is as vital to their pets’ health and safety as it is to the two-legged members of their family.”

Survey respondents also said they may cut spending on pet fashions, toys and trips to service providers such as pet walkers, pet sitters and groomers in the midst a recession. [April 2008 PET AGE]
