FWS Evaluates Constrictors as Potentially Injurious Wildlife
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting public comment and reviewing data to determine whether the importation and interstate transport of certain species of constrictor snakes should be prohibited.
After the agency reviews available biological and economic information on snakes from the Python, Boa and Eunectes genera, it will decide whether certain species merit further analyses. Additional studies—as well as another opportunity for public comment—would be necessary before the FWS could add the species to the list of injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act.
Species listed as injurious wildlife may not be imported or transported between states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States; such prohibitions apply to the species, gametes, viable eggs and hybrids. However, federal law does not prohibit possession and sale within a state, if the species is not prohibited by the state itself.
The FWS is collecting data on the numbers of breeders, animals sold, annual sales, and the cost to implement propagation and restoration programs for native species affected by Python, Boa or Eunectes species.
The agency also will use the information to communicate the potential risks of feral constrictors and expand outreach to prevent the release of unwanted pets. In addition, the FWS may use the data to develop permitting systems.

• Help PIJAC search literature on the biology of any of the species under review. Contact info@pijac.org and pijacscience@nelsoncable.com.
• Submit written comments directly to the FWS. Send them to Public Comments Processing, Attn: RIN 1018-AV68, Division of Policy and Directives Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 4401 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 222, Arlington, VA 22203.
