5K Raises $3K at Backer Show
The second annual 5K Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by GoToRovers.com (Portland, Ore.) and held in conjunction with H.H. Backer’s Pet Industry Christmas Trade Show on Oct. 15, raised $3,000 for shelter animals in Oak Park, Ill.
Russell Herman, owner of Pet Saver in Rochester, N.Y., won the race for the second year in a row.
The funds went to the show’s designated charity, The Animal Care League of Oak Park, a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization that provides shelter, food and medical attention to dogs and cats until they can find permanent homes. Founded in 1973, the shelter routinely provides a low-cost spay and neuter clinic for its area.
The temperature at the early morning race time was a cool 43 degrees, but nearly 100 runners registered for the industrywide event, which brought together retailers, manufacturers and distributors.
The event’s gold sponsor was Snoozer Pet Products (Greenville, S.C.). Additional sponsors included SJT Enterprises Inc. (Westlake, Ohio), H.H. Backer Associates Inc. (Chicago), Charming Pet Products (Agoura Hills, Calif.), DogSpeak Cards (Wilmington, N.C.), Tuffy’s Pet Foods Inc. (Perham, Minn.), Elmo’s Closet (Little Silver, N.J.), Mirage Pet Products (Nixa, Mo.), Yellow Dog Design (Greensboro, N.C.), Simply Fido L.L.C. (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and 7 Lucky Dogs (Snohomish, Wash.).
