APPA Studies People Who Don’t Own Pets
A new study takes a different approach to analyzing pet ownership: Instead of asking pet owners what they think, the National Pet Market Opportunity Study from the American Pet Products Association (Greenwich, Conn.) focuses on those who don’t own pets to try to find out why.
The report defines current pet owners, previous pet owners and nonpet owners through a detailed demographic analysis. It delves into the reasons why previous and nonpet owners choose not to own pets currently and compares their attitudes about pets to those of current pet owners.
The study particularly focuses on the effect that presence of children in the household and household income have on pet ownership. The report also analyzes the effect of current economic conditions on pet ownership. Summaries of media activities, Internet access and awareness of new pet products for all three demographics also are included.
As a bonus, the report also contains an appendix with executive summary material from the current 2011-2012 APPA National Pet Owners Survey. This section details current levels of pet ownership such as percentage of households owning pets (in total and by species), number of households owning pets (in total and by species), percentage change in pet ownership and trended pet ownership (by individual species).
