Cat Food Sickens Pets

Diamond Pet Foods (Meta, Mo.) at press time continued to recall Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball cat foods because they lack thiamine, which can lead to health issues and even fatal illness.

Distributed in multiple states in the south and along the East Coast, the dried cat food had sickened 21 cats, according to published reports.

Symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. Neurologic signs also can develop, and may include wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures. Untreated, thiamine deficiency can result in death.

Retailers or consumers who have affected lots of food are urged to return it for a full refund. Call 800-977-8797 for specific date codes and packaging numbers. [February 2010 PET AGE]
