Business Boos Health Care Bill

Health care reform moved closer to reality in late December with the passage of the Senate’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. But big business and small business alike were still urging legislators to go back to the drawing board at press time.

The Pet Industry Distributors Association (Bel Air, Md.) is among organizations such as the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (Washington) that have joined forces in Start Over!, a coalition whose objective is to persuade Congress to kill the current bills and “get health care reform right” by focusing on cost containment.

The coalition teamed up with Employers for a Healthy Economy, comprising close to 200 employer associations, to fight the bills.

Among the chorus of voices in the business community who say the bill doesn’t go far enough to control costs are the National Retail Federation (Washington), the National Federation of Independent Business (Nashville, Tenn.) and the National Small Business Association (Washington).

At press time, the House and Senate versions had yet to be reconciled. [February 2010 PET AGE]
