Industry Mourns Ken Chancey

Ken Chancey, president of Pet Food Ltd. in Tampa, Fla., died Dec. 2, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 53.

Chancey was born in Jacksonville, Fla., but was a longtime resident of the Tampa area. An animal lover, he spent 35 years in the pet industry and was instrumental in using technology to move the industry forward.

Chancey managed and built Country Pet Supply from 1985 to 1996, according to his longtime friend and employer Dr. Bern Levine. He worked for Central Pet-Tampa from 1996 to 2007, and joined Pet Food Ltd. in 2007.

Chancey served on the board of directors of the Pet Industry Distributors Association (Bel Air, Md.) throughout the 1990s, culminating with one term as president and one term as past president.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as outdoor activities, including riding his Harley-Davidson, boating, skiing, hunting and fishing. He also was an avid Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan.

Chancey was preceded in death by his daughter, Trisha. Survivors include his sons Kenneth Jr. and Chad (and Chad’s wife, Sara); his daughter, Brittany; two grandchildren; a sister, Cindy Farlow; a brother, Curtis Chancey; nieces and nephews; and his mother, Peggy Elliott, and her husband, Charles.

A memorial service was held in December in Tampa. The family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. [February 2010 PET AGE]
