Pet Care Trust
Gives $10,000 to Habitattitude
The Pet Care Trust (Arcadia, Calif.) awarded a $10,000 grant
to Habitattitude, a philanthropic action that will allow the
Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (Washington) to disseminate
campaign materials to approximately 5,000 independent retailers
across the country.
“We are pleased to join with PIJAC to expand the pet
industry’s involvement in this exciting environmental
initiative by providing pet retailers information to pass
on to their customers,” said Lew Sutton, president of
the foundation.
Habitattitude is a public awareness campaign to promote responsible
pet ownership and discourage the release of unwanted aquatic
animals and plants into the environment. It evolved through
a partnership of PIJAC, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Sea
Grant Program.
“This partnership, which includes hundreds of federal
and state agencies, academic institutions, public aquaria,
horticultural facilities and pet retailers across the country,
focuses on engaging aquarium owners, water gardeners and outdoor
pond owners on how to properly handle aquatic animals and
plants in a way that helps conserve our natural resources,”
said Sutton. “Quite simply, it is not about the fish
and plants. It is about promoting environmentally friendly
consumer behavior.”
The Pet Care Trust, a nonprofit charitable foundation, promotes
public understanding about the value of—and right to
enjoy—companion animals, research and education, and
professionalism among members of the companion animal community.
