“It’s important for cat owners to be able to easily remove or prevent cat odors in the home,” said Shalini Nilakantan, retail products group marketing spokesperson for the Simple Solution product line.
“Ultimately, the need is for products with a delivery system that makes applying them super easy and ensures the proper amount of product is being used in order to do the job thoroughly.
“In addition, it’s also important that cats are accepting of such products,” added Nilakantan.
Stains and Odors
The Simple Solution Litter Box Deodorizer is an odor-encapsulating formula that is designed to help neutralize smells that result from urine and feces residue.
When it comes to stain and odor removal around the home, the Simple Solution Extreme Cat Stain & Odor Remover is a professional strength formula that the company claims to be three times more powerful than a standard formula. It uses a proprietary blend of bacteria-fighting enzymes designed to completely eliminate cat odors and stains from carpets, upholstery or any other water-safe surface.
Lambert Kay’s Fresh ’n Clean Cat Odor-Off Carpet and Surface Spray is designed to work on all surfaces that cats come into daily contact with, such as carpets, upholstery, bedding, hardwood floors, tile, linoleum, litter boxes and cat carriers.
The product also contains the brand’s proprietary Skunk-Off technology that works five ways to instantly and permanently eliminate odors from cat urine, tom cat spray, feces, vomit and body odor on contact.
When it comes to litter, there is a trend toward more lightweight formulas. However, manufacturers are quick to point out that these lighter formulations in no way compromise odor control.
According to Jim Kerley, assistant manager for the Tidy Cats brand, “the Tidy Cats LightWeight products have been very well-received, as the lighter formulations have the same odor control fragrance applied to standard litters.
“In fact, the Tidy Cats with Glade Tough Odor Solutions was our most successful launch to date, so we quickly realized that consumers really liked the combination of a litter brand they trust from Tidy Cats, plus odor control they trust from Glade. That is why we introduced a Tidy Cats LightWeight with Glade Tough Odor Solutions, making it the third lightweight product in our lineup,” he said.
Simple Solution 30 Day Cat Litter is made from attapulgite clay, known for its highly absorptive qualities. The litter doesn’t clump and thus doesn’t require scooping. It is designed for multi-cat households and, as per the company website, is said to be effective for a month at a time.
The new disposable litter boxes produced by Clean Healthy Bowls are compostable.
“They are available both unlined or with a leak-proof liner that looks like plastic but is 100 percent compostable, too,” said Mark Talt, the company’s president. “Thus, for the cat owner who wants to maintain a high level of cleanliness, it’s a matter of tossing the entire box and replacing it with a fresh one. The system is ideal for people who show their cats and are continually away from home with their felines,” he said.
Fresh Fur and Fresh Air
The range of feline odor control products also extends to a variety of skin and fur formulations such as Vet’s Best Waterless Cat Bath, which is a natural skin and fur cleaner with moisturizing ingredients.
While cats may have a reputation for being very efficient self-cleaners, they need help with grooming as they age. Often, elderly felines are known to get wet litter on their coat, which dries hard and makes fur smell.
According to DERMagic’s founder Dr. Adelia Ritchie, the company’s soap bar makes it easy for pet owners to attend to efficiently cleaning such areas and leaving fur smelling fragrant and fresh.
The feline odor control category also includes food and water additives such as Goodbye Odor from Marshall Pet Products.
The product works internally to neutralize urine and feces odors.
“It contains natural plant-based amino acids and takes about three to five days to balance the pet’s system in order to make a noticeable difference,” said Linda Cope, media relations spokesperson for the company.
“It was originally developed for human use and has been used successfully on cats and other small animals,” she said. According to Cope, it’s safe to use with pets that have kidney and urinary issues.
Finally, air purifiers such as CritterZone work to remove any feline-related smells from a home. The manufacturer refers to their compact plug-in device as an “air naturalizer.” It works by creating a charged flow that cleans the air, removing odors and allergens as well as any germs and bacteria in the air in the process.
