Mars Petcare Expands Operations in Arkansas

Mars Petcare announced on December 14 that the company will expand its Fort Smith, Arkansas, pet food manufacturing facility. The site, which produces CESAR and NUTRO brand dog food and SHEBA wet cat food, will convert a can line into a tray line and add two new lines at the facility to increase production. As part of the expansion, Mars Petcare has committed to invest $72 million, with the potential investment up to $110 million, in the Fort Smith location and create 130 new jobs over the next few years.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson joined leaders from Mars Petcare and local officials at the announcement celebration in Fort Smith (as pictured below). This investment is in addition to the $130 million invested in the site between 2007 and 2015, w
hich created more than 200 full time jobs.

“Since the site was built, the city of Fort Smith and state of Arkansas have been tremendously supportive of our investments and business,” said Mark Johnson, president of Mars Petcare. “Their support and the high quality northwest Arkansas workforce has enabled our continued growth, ensuring we can continue to feed more pets.”

It was the area’s dedication to business and proven success that made Mars choose this plant location, in particular, to expand.

“The location in western Arkansas, the economic development engine of the state, is a very pro-business area with highly engaged partners,” Director of Corporate Communications Jam Stewart said in an email. “There is also a technically skilled and strong workforce in the area that can fill the 130 jobs that are being created at the site… Since 2007, $202 million has been invested in the Fort Smith plant site. Our partners in the area worked hard to make this investment possible and to grow our footprint in the area.”

When the site was constructed in Fort Smith in 2007, it was the state’s first sustainable manufacturing facility and the first sustainable pet food manufacturing facility in the world. The facility is LEED-Gold certified from the United States Green Building Council. It achieved gold status for its efforts to recycle water, reduce energy use and protect against erosion and light pollution.

“Mars Petcare’s decision to expand this facility speaks highly of the company’s existing workforce in Fort Smith,” Hutchinson said. “This is a very significant investment that will impact not only the local economy, but that of the state. Thanks to the leadership of Mars Petcare for choosing to grow in Arkansas and the Associates who make it such a great place to work.”

The Fort Smith investment is the latest in a series of significant economic investments Mars has made in local communities. In the last five years alone, the company has invested more than $1 billion in U.S. factories and operations and created more than 1,000 U.S. jobs.
