Just like people, dogs are susceptible to suffering from anxiety, which has a negative impact on their overall quality of life. Sometimes the nervous system has an overreaction to something it perceives as a threat, and unlike humans—who can find comfort in talking things out and reminding themselves that feeling anxious is a temporary state of mind that will not cause them physical harm—dogs have no idea why they are feeling so terrified or how to calm down.

Some of the symptoms of anxiety in dogs are hiding, cowering and destructiveness. Triggers include hearing loud noises, being left alone, meeting new people or animals and travel.

In fact, a 2018 study sponsored by ThunderWorks, creator of the ThunderShirt, found that more than 80 percent of dog- and cat-owning families have experienced anxiety-related behavior problems with their pet. The study included 510 dog owners and 567 cat owners.

“We found almost 50 percent of the dog-owning families surveyed had a dog that experiences loud noise (i.e., thunder and fireworks) and separation anxiety – the two most common types of anxiety,” said Phil Blizzard, CEO of ThunderWorks.

So how can pet owners help their beloved pooches feel more at ease? Thankfully, solutions for canines suffering from anxiety come in a variety of forms, from relaxing sprays and CBD/hemp products to a speaker that can play music specifically created to calm a pup. These are just a few of the items currently available to provide relief for dogs.

It’s best for retailers to offer a variety of options, since what might help one pooch chill out may not necessarily work as well for another. And sometimes, the best solution involves a combination of approaches, so it might be good for dog owners to arm themselves with as many remedies as possible to combat anxiety.
